The Rotgipfler grape is indigenous to the Thermenregion of Austria. This wine is a very fresh, distinctive white with expressive spicy notes & hints of exotic fruits. You can taste melon & lychee with layers of citrus & intriguing flavours of ginger & white pepper, all coming together to create a long developing finish. The wine has a rich structure, tingling acidity & a little residual sugar that makes it even more charming. Rotgipfler is a perfect accompaniment to a variety of Asian dishes.
The vineyards are situated on gentle slopes around 4 villages near Oberwaltersdorf & all use integrated & sustainable methods. The soil is brown earth with limestone and the climate is a unique combination of both Pannonian and Continental. The vines themselves are anything between 20-40 years old & pruned so there are 8 shoots per vine & 1 bunch per shoot.
The grapes were handpicked in October producing about 40 l/ha. They were gently pressed & had 8hrs of skin contact. Fermentation used part natural & part selected yeasts, with 5% in barrels (100%malolactic fermentation) & the rest in stainless steel tanks. 50% was aged on lees for 6 months.
