A deeply luscious fruity red with an earthy, cherry nose, with some hints of orchard fruit. The tannins are suitably light which allows the complex fruits on the palate to express typical Pinot Noir character. The wine is fresh, smooth & yet highly complex delivering on the palate a variety of flavours including red fruits, ripe raspberries, hints of peach, plus soft spice, marzipan and warm vanilla. A wonderful body with well-integrated oak & a very lengthy finish. An absolute pleasure.
The vineyards are around Oberwaltersdorf & have barren alluvial soil with high lime content, white, fine gravel in the sub-soil & occasional sandy, clayey layers.
Selective hand-picking of the ripest & finest grapes in mid-October. 60% were de-stemmed & crushed, 30% were left as whole clusters. There was 10% carbonic maceration, & then normal maceration of crushed & whole berries at 8°C for 7 days. There was 80% spontaneous fermentation & then pressed 14 days after fermentation onset. 14 months aging in oak barrels - 30% in new barrels, 40% in second and 30% in third-fill barrels.
